Mesut Özil on Real Madrid exit: "I didn't feel the coach's trust"

In an interview with French television channel TF1, Mesut Özil has discussed his motives for leaving Real Madrid over the summer.

Özil, who completed a move to Premier League side Arsenal on the final day of the transfer window, said: “It is very important for me that the coach shows faith in me and believes in me.

“I had no doubt that I would stay at Real Madrid when last season came to an end. But then there was a moment when I didn't feel the coach's trust. At Arsenal, on the other hand, I feel the exact opposite.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger discussed Özil’s arrival at the Emirates Stadium with TF1. “PSG wanted him, but I had an advantage because I’d already had that contact [when trying to sign him three years previously],” he said.

“He already knew me and the fact I spoke German put him at his ease. The first contact happened at my place, for discretion. He decided in 24 hours.”
